Your car faces a fundamentally different set of challenges in July than it does in January. Summer heat accelerates fluid breakdown and strains the cooling system, while winter cold saps battery power, thickens engine oil, and reduces tire grip. Never Open a Hot Coolant Reservoir Cap
The cooling system operates under pressure. If the engine has been running, the coolant inside can be well above 200°F. Opening the reservoir or radiator cap on a hot engine can cause a sudden release of scalding fluid. Always wait at least 30 minutes after turning off the engine before checking coolant levels, and open the cap slowly with a cloth over it.

Cold weather is harder on mechanical and electrical systems than most drivers expect. A failing battery that barely managed summer can quit entirely on the first freezing morning. Cold Weather Battery Failures Are Preventable
A car battery that's more than three years old should be load-tested before winter, not just visually inspected. Cold temperatures dramatically reduce a battery's ability to deliver starting power — a battery at 0°F delivers only about 40% of its rated capacity. Don't wait for a no-start situation to discover a weak battery; testing is quick, widely available, and often free at auto parts retailers.
What You're Actually Checking — and Why
Tires: Tire pressure is measured in PSI (pounds per square inch). Most passenger cars call for 32–36 PSI — check the sticker inside your driver's door jamb, not the number on the tire sidewall. A pressure gauge costs a few dollars and takes under two minutes to use. Tread depth should be at least 2/32 of an inch; place a penny into the tread groove with Lincoln's head pointing down — if you can see all of his head, the tire is worn out.
Engine coolant: Coolant (also called antifreeze) circulates through the engine to carry away heat in summer and prevent the water in that system from freezing in winter. The reservoir is usually a translucent plastic tank under the hood with MIN/MAX markings.
