Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease also known as IBD. It is seen that IBD includes diseases that directly affect the gastrointestinal tract of the body. On a similar note, ulcerative colitis is caused when the colon or the large intestine is inflamed. This part of the body is also known as the rectum.
