All you need to know about CDL training

It is mandatory to get a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) to become a commercial motor vehicle driver. With a CDL, a driver can drive their vehicles across state lines all over the country. But it is not for all drivers. These licenses are applicable for operating any vehicle with a gross weight rating (GVWR) of more than 26,000 pounds. A driver must undergo CDL training to get this license, which several trucking companies often sponsor.

Benefits offered by trucking companies
The trucking industry is going through a period of high growth and expansion. Job opportunities abound as each company looks to hire more drivers.

This is a good period for new and experienced drivers. Many truck drivers are looking for better job opportunities with companies that offer higher salaries and other benefits.

So, trucking companies are competing with each other to offer more perks to entice drivers to stay with them. These include higher pay, more home time, bonuses, and other benefits. While higher pay and more time in their home region are definite attractions, for many drivers, educational programs are better perks. CDL training
CDL courses provide special training in the knowledge and skills needed to pass the licensing exam successfully. Community colleges, private schools, and CDL training schools that are operated by trucking companies – all these provide CDL training. Community college courses may not cost as much as private school training, but private schools can be more flexible in class timings and course duration.

Trucking companies’ CDL training schools offer classes to employees of these companies. Some trucking companies offer training for which the employee may be expected to reimburse them later. Some companies may deduct small amounts in the employee paycheck towards the fees. However, many big companies now offer completely free training, provided the employee stays with them for a stipulated period after completing the course, usually for a minimum of one year.

On getting the license, the student is assured of employment in the sponsoring company. Trucking companies offering free CDL training include the following.

  • Prime Transportation, which operates numerous types of trucks like flatbeds, refrigerated trucks, and tankers. As a new driver, you will be hauling freight with the assistance of a CDL instructor. This on-the-job training provides experience to drivers and instills confidence in them even while they are studying for the license.
  • Knight Transportation offers a similar program, with instructors accompanying trainee drivers. On acquiring the CDL, you get an attractive pay structure.
  • USA Truck has partnerships with different CDL Training Schools to provide training for their employees.
